By Sonia Bhati ‘14, Contributor. Have you walked by the rock wall recently and noticed a growing vegetable garden next to several big concrete blocks? These concrete blocks will be the base of CCDS’s Pizza Oven. Funded by the Environmental Council, the oven will be ready for use by next March.

It is important to remember that there are members of our own local community who need our assistance. Accordingly, when allocating our community service commitment among all the worthwhile causes which need and deserve our attention, some portion of our community service time should be devoted to alleviating the consequences of the economic distress which has become increasingly widespread in our state and local area.

Dean of Service Learning, Ms. Deborah Floyd, said that the main Upper school initiative for the rest of the year will be to raise money to support the March of Dimes and their fight against infant mortality and birth defects. After all, she said, “Who doesn’t love babies?”

By Sophie Weinstein ‘13, Contributor. On Tuesday during the Wrap-In assembly, Head of School Robert Macrae shared with the CCDS community that the idea for the event came from a hippie. For six years CCDS has managed to get the entire student body, 18 months to 18 years, to participate in a December Wrap- In and gather in the dining terrace for an assembly to tie the theme of giving together.

Micro-financing is based on the idea that if one person in a community starts a business, the entire community benefits from a strengthened economy and a source of steady income. The loans can be small but have a big impact.

This year, CCDS saw an explosion in community service projects, from Get Buzzed to Unified for UNIFAT. The worry now is whether CCDS can keep so many service projects going without giving the students a burnout.
