Compiled by Kathryn Black, ‘11, The Lens Section Editor, and Kate Taylor, ‘11, The Lens Editor. It was our first day in Jerusalem, where we would stay for five weeks, and we had been deliberating for over an hour on the specific restrictions that we, as a community of twenty-six, would set on activities during Shabbat. Some of the more traditionally religious Fellows were insistent upon adhering to halacha, or Jewish law, in every possible way, disavowing the use of electricity and prohibiting writing and the reading of non-Jewish books, attitudes distinctly unfamiliar to me because of my less observant background.

By Will Portman, ‘10, Editor-in-Chief. As the 2010-11 Scroll staff, led by incoming Editors-in-Chief Cody Pomeranz, ‘11, and Amanda Young, ‘11, takes over the reins of the newspaper this week, I thought it’d be appropriate to take a look back at the work of the 2009-10 staff.

By Allison Lazarus ’10, Perspectives Section Editor. I don’t like the idea that my choices are so blatantly misconstrued as representative of ideologies to which I don’t subscribe wholeheartedly. Counterpoint by Xanni Brown coming soon!

This summer, I traveled to Israel for five weeks on a Bronfman Youth Fellowship. Although I knew that this would be an intense experience when I applied, I realized quickly that I did not really understand then how rigorous the program would prove to be. Over the course of the summer, we were exposed to truly amazing issues and people in the context of some of the most beautiful and meaningful places in the world.
