Local service should be prioritized in tough economic climate

By Alexandra Sukin ‘15, Contributor. The headlines of a recent Enquirer served to underscore the parade of negative economic news about our local economy. It is important to remember that there are members of our own local community who need our assistance. Accordingly, when allocating our community service commitment among all the worthwhile causes which need and deserve our attention, some portion of our community service time should be devoted to alleviating the consequences of the economic distress which has become increasingly widespread in our state and local area.

PERSPECTIVE: Expensive SAT prep is unfair to many students

PERSPECTIVE: Expensive SAT prep is unfair to many students

By Haleigh Miller ‘12, News Section Editor. Over the past years, it’s undeniable that college acceptances have grown increasingly competitive. Part of that increased difficulty is based on pressure for students to attain higher test scores. Many are of the opinion that the more effective forms of test prep require a more personal touch, either from a class or personal tutor. But, those more individual forms of preparation are more expensive. Does that give those with more money to spend an advantage in getting better test scores, and a better shot at college acceptances by extension?

PERSPECTIVE: Snow day decisions should be clear cut

PERSPECTIVE: Snow day decisions should be clear cut

By Amanda Young ‘11, Co-Editor-in-Chief. 152 Upper School students signed out of school early on Tuesday Jan. 11 citing the snow as their excuse. There are 250 students in the student body. I understand the snow didn’t fall until late in the morning and the majority of local schools were in session so keeping school on without such an email to the parents was the most viable option. Regardless, Dr. Macrae should have made a decision and stuck with it.

PERSPECTIVE: Cantor voices support for dress code changes

By Jules Cantor ‘11, Sports Section Editor. At the end of the 2010 summer, I had received an e-mail outlining the dress code for the 2010-2011 school year. When I looked at it, I saw that the administration had decided to revert to the old policy of no sweaters and mandatory collars under hoodies. I really thought they had a made a mistake.
