With tens of thousands dead and hundreds of thousands wounded and homeless in the wake of a series of devastating earthquakes, humanitarian aid is desperately needed in Haiti.  The Center for International Disaster Information has advised that people who want to give not make in-kind donations, such as canned goods or clothes, but rather contribute financially to a relief organization.  The following are a few ways to help:

1. Text HAITI to 90999 to donate $10 to the American Red Cross to help with relief efforts.  $10 will be charged to your cell phone bill.

2. Text YELE to 501501 to donate $5 to Yéle Haiti to help with relief efforts.  $5 will be charged to your cell phone bill.  Yéle Haiti is a philanthropic organization founded by musician, activist, and Haiti native Wyclef Jean.

3. Donate online to the American Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, Habitat for Humanity, UNICEF, or another relief organization.  A helpful listing of non-profit organizations with relief operations in Haiti can be found at InterAction.org.

Additionally, according to the Department of State,  “people in the U.S. or Canada with information or inquiries about U.S. citizens in Haiti may reach the Haiti Task Force at 888-407-4747.”
